Overview
The Ellison Myers ‘Tarzan’ Brown sculpture project will honor the remarkable legacy of a two-time Boston Marathon champion and a hero of the Narragansett Tribe. Known for his resilience, talent, and the pivotal role he played in naming Heartbreak Hill, Tarzan Brown’s victories in 1936 and 1939 symbolize perseverance and excellence. This sculpture will serve as a permanent tribute to his contributions to marathon running, Indigenous heritage, and the Narragansett community.

Brown’s legacy extends beyond his athletic achievements to his role as a cultural figure who embodied resilience and strength. His life and career continue to inspire both the Indigenous community and the broader world, reminding us of the power of perseverance and the enduring spirit of the human will.

This initiative, led by the Brown Family with the support of the 26.2 Foundation, aims to inspire future generations by commemorating Tarzan Brown’s extraordinary story.

Please note, this project is in the process of being approved. The proposed location for the sculpture is Newton, Massachusetts.

Project Details
We are seeking an artist to create a life-sized bronze sculpture of Ellison “Tarzan” Brown, to be installed in 2026.

Scope of Work: The selected artist will be responsible for:

• Designing and creating a life-sized bronze statue of Ellison Tarzan Brown.
• Working collaboratively with the Brown Family, 26.2 Foundation, and Buccacio Sculpture Services during the creative process.

Artist Submission Requirements

1. Proposal Submission:
   • A detailed drawing of the proposed design.
   • A list of materials to be used (sculpture will be outside; materials must be able to withstand weather elements and conditions in Massachusetts)
   • Examples of previous work (with a focus on bronze sculptures).
   • A cost estimate for the project, including materials, labor, and installation.
   • Ability to travel to Massachusetts 
   • A timeline for completion.
2. Eligibility:
   • Artists with significant experience in creating bronze sculptures.
   • Indigenous artists are strongly encouraged to apply.
3. Submission Process:
   • Complete the online application form
   • Attach all required documents and design files in high resolution.

Selection Process: A panel of judges, including members of the Brown Family. Proposal will be evaluated based on likeness, technical skill, and relevance to the theme.

Budget: The project budget will be discussed upon selection, ensuring resources are sufficient to meet the quality and vision required.
